The holidays are all about giving, and giving to someone in need can really make the difference in that person’s life. While it is easy to find ways to give-there are Santa’s ringing bells in front of nearly every store this time of year- programs such as Toys for Tots really go above and beyond. Toys for Tots is a program that is run by the United States Marine Corps. The mission is to provide toys for less fortunate children.
Beginning of Toys for Tots
Toys for Tots has been around since 1947.That year, Major Bill Hendricks wife had attempted to donate a Raggedy Ann doll and could not find a place that would take it. Inspired by the incident, he gathered a group of Marines and together, they collected and refurbished toys to give to local children in Los Angeles. The program was so successful that the following year, it was made into a nationwide effort. Henrick’s position in public relations for Warner Brothers Studios lended the program celebrity support, and Walt Disney Studios designed the logo that is still used today. At first, Marines would pick up the bins from stores and organizations that joined in on the effort and redistribute them to local communities. Over time, the program has evolved and there are many point people, volunteers who help with all facets of collection and redistribution.
First Lady Supports Toys for Tots
In 2009, first lady Michelle Obama placed the first Toys for Tots bin at the white house. In 2011, she participated in an event for Toys for Tots. At this time, Toys for Tots collects only new toys for children, as the Marine Corps so longer delegates toy refurbishing. The program redistributes thousands of toys every year to children in need.
