A compassionate 9-year-old girl in Colorado shaved her head to show support for her best friend that is battling cancer, and was promptly suspended from school for violating the dress code. The school, Caprock Academy, has since had a board meeting and decided that the girl would be allowed to return to school without repercussion. However, the decision of the school to suspend the girl both baffled and infuriated parents across the country.
Social Media Firestorm
The girl’s mother, Jamie Olson Renfro, and her friend’s mother, Wendy Smith Campbell took to facebook to air the unfortunate situation and were greeting by resounding support. There was also a huge element of anger directed at the school, but Jamie Renfro defended the school, saying that the administration was supportive and courteous through the entire ordeal. Renfro declared that she understood the dress code policy, but was asking the board to make an exception in this case, since her daughter shaved her head in solidarity and support of her friend.
On Tuesday, the school allowed the young Renfro girl to return to school and during the board meeting that followed the school day, it was decided that she would be allowed to continue going to school because of the circumstances surrounding the policy violation. While her parents are happy with the decision, many parents across the country expressed disgust that it should have taken so much to come to the decision to let the girl continue going to school. Jamie Renfro says that she hopes all of the attention surrounding the incident will help garner attention for children’s cancer.
