Early Thursday morning, a storm that may become a blizzard descended upon the Northeastern United States. In some parts of coastal New England, a state of emergency was declared, and special parking regulations were enforced to assist with plowing. Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, urged city residents to leave cars at home in case of highway and roadway closures. The storm is expected to drop between three and six inches on New York, and ten to fourteen inches on more rural parts of the state and other areas of New England.

Sub-Zero Temperatures

Temperatures were also expected to drop to just a few degrees above zero in most parts of New England. The extreme cold is expected to last for the duration of the storm, which may not end until early Friday morning. The cold and snowy forecast was good news for ski lodges in the area, with some reporting a huge increase in skiers from this time last year.

Weather Grounds Travelers

The snow changed plans for many travelers, as flights were cancelled all over New England. Holiday travelers scrambled to reschedule flights over the weekend, and those traveling by car or bus were urged to sit tight until the weather clears. A storm-wary Maine was happy to hear that the worst of the snow was expected to fall on Southern New England, as the state is still recovering from an ice storm that left about 100,000 customers without power. Although it is yet to be confirmed, another storm may be coming in on Sunday.
